Magnolia Steripath Blood Culture Diversion Device:  Device reduces blood culture contamination false-positive rates my eliminated manual diversion methods (initial tube waste) through built-in passive diversion technology.

CONCERN: The device has 2 sharps; a butterfly needle and a vacutainer holder needle. After activating the butterfly device to shield the needle, the clinician must then “squeeze” the blood diversion mechanism then the clinical must dispose of the device in a funnel-top sharps container that are standard in all patient rooms.

The Steripath device will NOT fit into the funnel top opening of a sharps container if the clinician does not fully depress the blood diversion mechanism. Additionally the device is bulky and heavy and can slip out of the clinician’s hands while actively attempting to fill both blood culture bottles.

During disposal, the activation of the butterfly needle brings a sense of false-confidence because the vacutainer holder needle continues to pose a threat while attempting to dispose of the device into the sharps container.  The majority of our Steripath sharps exposures have occurred during disposal due to the vacutainer needle.
