Topic Overview:

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major public health concern with survival rates in the United States at only 8%. Additionally, the low survival rates are stagnant for decades. Houston, TX, is the 4th largest city in the US, with a population of more than 2 million. Houston is also the most ethnically diverse city with people from 90 nations residing here. The 10-year research conducted by Dr. Varsha Vakil revealed racial disparity among the population most-affected with OHCA and the administration of the prompt and timely Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR). Dr. Vakil also discusses the importance of CPR training and AED use.

Objectives:

1. Examining Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) survival outcomes in Houston, TX

2. Evaluating the population most affected with OHCA in Houston, TX

3. Creating awareness on the importance of Bystander CPR skills
